Sustainable Education Services

Dear teachers and educators,

As term three begins, it's a good time to start planning the rest of 2014. Make the most of it with our educational services that can provide learning opportunities for a wide range of grade levels.

Students can explore the concept of sustainability through many subjects and can learn to see unused or discarded materials as a valuable resource.

Reverse Garbage is an exciting resource for teachers of the visual and performing arts, design, technology, film and television, science and geography.

We are a not-for-profit co-operative, founded in 1998 that sources and collects industrial offcuts and discards from over 300 businesses in the south east Queensland area. We are located in Woolloongabba in Brisbane.

We actively reduce the amount of useful materials going to waste and offer unique and creative services to schools that encourage re-use and recycling and stretch your budget further!

Our services include:

  • Inexpensive Sustainable Materials
  • Environmental Art Workshops
  • Mail Order Materials
  • Warehouse Talks and Tours

Inexpensive Sustainable Materials

The Reverse Garbage warehouse is brimming with an array of colourful and interesting salvaged materials including; timber, textiles, foam, fabrics, metal, props, plastics, boxes, barrels, rope, paper, card and more.

Our materials are excellent for art and craft projects, models, small building projects, film and stage sets, sculptures and experiments. They provide an interesting challenge for students, are inexpensive and a great sustainable alternative to mainstream art and craft supplies.

Environmental Art Workshops

Our experienced facilitators, Nadine, Mercedes, and Lilly run hands on art based environmental education workshops for schools using salvaged materials. We also run professional development workshops for educators wanting to incorporate sustainability and re-use into their curriculum.

Our workshops fuse art and environmental education, are designed to relate to the Australian Curriculum and the age and skill level of your class. We cover areas such as Science, History, Geography, Technology, Art and Home Economics. Please contact us to receive a copy of our current workshop catalogue.

Within the workshops, we teach which natural resources our materials come from and participants develop an appreciation of how consumption and waste impacts on our environment. The creative application of salvaged materials will encourage your students to think outside the box in transforming ordinary objects that are often deemed rubbish.

We offer internal workshops at our warehouse in Woolloongabba or we can travel to your location, anywhere in SE QLD. We provide all the necessary tools and materials needed to run the workshop.

We are currently taking workshop bookings for the remainder of 2014. Prices vary depending on numbers and location. Please contact us for a tailored quote or to receive our current workshop catalogue.

“Our visit to Reverse Garbage was an exciting and inspiring event for our Grade 1 and 4/5 class. They started the session with enthusiasm as they looked around the room; and ended it with great excitement because they had created something special and unique. Nadine was very inspiring and did not limit the children in their ideas. We all had a wonderful time!” Kialyn Wassenberg, Good Shepherd Christian School, 13 Sept 2012, Wearable Art Workshop
“The facilitators were well prepared and had organised examples of push/pull toys for the students to view before creating their own. The materials set out for the students to use were perfect for the task and age appropriate. The facilitators were enthusiastic and hands on the entire workshop. It was a fantastic workshop. The students had fun and learnt a lot. They were all very excited about taking their toys home and continued to make toys out of reusable materials at home.” Kelly Dunne, Grade 2, St Mary MacKillop Catholic Primary School, 12 Sept 2013, Push Pull Toys Workshop

“Love your work, always fun upending these and creating mayhem!”Clay Dawson, Rosewood State High School, September 2013

“The stuff was all fantastic - the activities I have done so far have been great and the kids all amazed me with their creative use of the materials - it was so much fun watching them dive into these foreign materials and such a welcome reprieve from standard craft items ready made that really don't inspire imaginations. We are really looking forward to working with you in the future.” Jane Allen, Brunswick Heads Public Library, January 2014
